Is English Important?



Human being is live creature who needs each other. One can not live by his/her self in this world. He/She needs many things that he/she can not find it out by his/her own. He works and does anything he can do for another. And at the same time, he needs their works.

In order to cover his/her needs, human makes communication among them. This is what in which language plays its role. Without language, people can not understand each other about their needs. Language is such a tool by which people express what they think about and feel of. Feels of love, fear, sadness, and so on could be affectively expressed in language form.

There are millions or billions of languages in this world. One community commonly has its language that is different with the others. In Lombok island for example, there are more than one hundred language that are used by the citizen. Some of them are seems to be similar, and some others are completely different. In this case, one who master more languages, he could make vaster communication. Contrary, if he understands only one language, he can only make direct communication with the user community of the language. Or we can say, the more languages one can understand, the more he can make communication. This is in one hand.

In other hand, one thinks that it is impossible to master too many languages in this world. To make communication wider someone could choose to master some language whose user community is in great quantity. One of these kinds of language in the world is English. Nowadays, English is the first international language.

English is used in many purposes and fields. In fields of commerce or trade, English language is used extensively, like what we can see on the labels of almost products. Many companies or employers now held test of English for the employees. This will help them to know their proficiency of English, since English is a need.

So it is in the field of science. Many books are written in English language. For the writers, they hope that their books could be accessed widely by many readers, so that they can get much more royalty from every sold book. This is like what we can see in the novel “Harry Potter”. The sale of the novel brings the writer to be one of the richest women in America .

In the case of Islamic studies, students now are not demanded to master Arabic language only, but also English language. Because, so many books in Islamic studies were written in English, besides Arabic. Since Islamic studies had been interesting the Western scientists long-long time ago, they put their thoughts about Islam and its sciences in written form excessively using English language. So, students who wish to understand Islamic sciences comprehensively, they have to involve both Moslems scholar thoughts and those of Orientalists. It means that they must master either Arabic language or English. That is why, the higher educations of Islamic studies now need such good proficiency of English. Based on this case, every university held test of English for the candidates of after graduate students.

This is what to say that we need the other for our purposes. We need language to deliver or inform about our needs. Since English is an international language, English is our need.
